Real Printed Books
A few of my favorites!
Your friendly nurserywoman here, giving a gentle reminder, yes online info is quick and easy. And often wildly inaccurate if not downright totally wrong.
This is the time of the season I'm researching plants to provide correct info on our tags and signs. It makes me want to cry, I'm so frustrated!
Information online showing a picture of a plant with the details of a totally different plant. Jasmine combined with white narcissus. Good grief!
Now, I have a nice stable foundation of decades of empirical knowledge built up, so, ok, ok, I will be fine.
But what about new gardeners?
Younger folks who don't think of books as their go-to because they've never learned that way?
Please go to the library or used bookstore and get yourself some real books.
And get garden books for the young person in your life.
Maybe you have hundreds of garden books? Invite new gardeners over to choose some for themselves, ones you don't need anymore because you have a built up store of knowledge banked away.
These are some of my favs.
*** of note, Vashon's own fine art botanical painter, Jean Emmons , painted the cover art for Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades oh so many, many decades ago. Us islanders treasure her botanical paintings, she is a real master of the art of capturing the true essence of buds, blooms, stems, leaves, fungi and even the sublime decrepitude of the waning beauty of plants and flowers as they fade away and decay.
