Now is a smart time to visit your local specialty nursery

Now is a smart time to visit your local specialty nursery to find some great deals on perennial grasses, perennials, shrubs and trees.

Yes, it is Christmas time shopping indoors in nurseries, but if that's not your thing this early in the holiday season you can easily sidestep the Christmas music and head straight through the store and outside to the nursery yard.

I recently visited Vashon's own Little Bird Gardens and Nursery and picked up some perennial grasses that had been on my wish list for quite some time.

My favorite things about buying perennial grasses and perennials in general right now?

1, often on sale!

2, you can split gallon size or larger rootballs into two or three clumps, which means free extra plants!

3, you don't have to water anything in the garden until next spring.

4, even though the plants themselves will be asleep, dormant, for the next four months , the roots continue to grow as long as there isn't a deep freeze visiting your garden.

What this means is that anything planted now gets about one year's jump ahead on growing as opposed to waiting until Spring to plant, this is especially nice if you have a big empty space to fill up quickly and need to do so without spending heaps of money.

***small nursery businesses really appreciate gardeners coming in at this time of the year looking for plants---that's why they are in the nursery business, it's really all about the plants!

I spent the morning cleaning up all the porches and patios and I'm enjoying the pots I filled with my freshly purchased perennial grasses from Little Bird Nursery. I added in some allium seedheads to catch the light too!
