Fall-blooming Schizostylis
I'm thankful today for our pink, blooming African lilies Schizostylis Giant Pink!
They began blooming about one month ago and will continue until the really deep freezing of winter once it arrives.
Before it gets really cold, I move the pots into the greenhouse that we keep at just above freezing, around 34 degrees, and I divide the plants to create more little guys to grow on for the next autumn blooming season.
Most people around here plant them in a sunny, open spot of their garden and that's just fine, but we get a bit colder here and they don't thrive like I'd like if we plant them in the garden, additionally the rain doesn't do the blooms any favors.
I keep ours in pots and put them on the back patio, under the eaves so the rain doesn't wreck the delicate shell-like blossoms.
With this way of doing things, we get blooms for about three months and the deep pink color of the flowers are a nice addition to all the usual fall flower colors of yellow, orange and maroon.
The best time to find these at your local, specialty nursery is fall, so look around now and see if you can grab one.
